A healthier diet of potatoes, cobbler, stew and other comfort foods.
If you are like me on a cold winter and night, you may pray for spring weather and seek comfort food until it arrives. But you may not be aware that there are ways to satisfy these cravings without having any impact on your health. For example, when I like mashed potatoes, I use skim milk instead of whole milk, and less butter to reduce saturated fat and calorie counts. I have to keep the potatoes on my skin, and I sprinkle a little bit of Parmesan cheese, not salt.
Knowing I couldn’t be alone, I asked my registered dietitian what they wanted in the winter and how they could improve the nutrition of the dishes. Here’s what they said:
“My comfort food is a sweet yeast bread cinnamon roll, which I’ve been doing for my family from scratch, but I’ve made some tweaks to make them slightly healthier. Using a combination of white, whole wheat flour and multi-purpose flour, it is a small fiber strengthening agent, but we’re every bit of fiber in the diet will increase, and I’m stuffing itself a third less butter and sugar. These high-calorie foods aren’t going to beat it, and I usually get a little frosting on top instead of curling up with cream cheese.
“I can’t pick a favorite comfort food, but I like chocolate pudding, it reminds me of my grandma, she once visited for me, she made with whole milk, a bag of pudding mix, I also use real milk, but choose a 2% weight loss, while maintaining its rich, I also use high quality cocoa powder, this is an amazing antioxidant power and incredible flavor. I also had less sugar than the packaging, so I got the sweet dark chocolate pudding.
“I like to use apple pie, rather than using the traditional method of making apple pie, I put the chop and organic Fuji apple in the lemon water, with fresh grated ginger root, ginger and fruit juice out of apple’s natural sweetness, so I don’t eat, I don’t need any sugar to multi-topping, I use the old-fashioned oatmeal (a kind of nutritious whole grains and sources of soluble fiber), almond butter (a heart healthy monounsaturated fats), cinnamon.”
4. Chocolate tea
“One cup of tea is my favorite chocolate comfort food, as long as a sip of this kind of sweet and tasty beverages, it’s easy to get on the Internet, I immediately feel a kind of slow sedation, flow through my body, on the other hand, free (don’t like hot chocolate) and a powerful source of antioxidants, which is good for heart health. Trust me: you and your heart will love chocolate tea.
5. Beef stew
“In the winter I go to eat comfort food is beef stew, I stick to lean meat stew, cooking slowly, in order to achieve maximum gentleness, according to my mood, I can in simmer pot, on the stove or in my new instant pot, for the sake of my beef stew, I joined the potatoes, carrots, celery, Onions, mushrooms, and peas, make colorful vegetables becomes heavy, thank my beef and vegetables, from protein, iron and zinc fiber and nutrients of beef and vegetables, this is the best of both worlds. ”
6. Stuffed grape leaves
“I actually have more than one food, I think it is” my “comfort food, but now vegetarian brewing of grape leaves at the top, I usually use brown rice (instead of white rice) still has a lot of green, mint, leek or coriander, sea salt, pepper, cinnamon and spices, and some I use a lot of lemon and a little olive oil in water cooking, not soak them with more oil, I prefer to put them with the ordinary organic Greek yogurt with a creamy goodness and some protein and probiotics.
Load baked potatoes.
“Baked potatoes are my favorite food, and I use some butter, steamed spinach or broccoli, plain non-fat Greek yogurt, Parmesan cheese and fresh black pepper to load my food. Makes it one of my meal, rather than an aspect, it is not only a comfort food, it is also a big and really satisfying, and contains some nutrients, including protein, fiber, potassium, and vitamin C”
