Go beyond Jane fonda tape: family fitness goes virtual.

Peep a Peloton indoor cycling course in the posh Chelsea neighborhood of New York, like most other indoor cycling classes. Sixty stationary bikes gather in a dark room, and the roaring music rings to make the heart beat faster, and a microphone driver drives the driver.

In addition to the class, there is a major difference: the tutor Jen Sherman is not just talking to the driver in the classroom. She also monitors riders in New Jersey, California, Massachusetts and Kansas. “Jamie from wichita, nice to see you this morning,” she said.

“The studio has a kind of energy is amazing, but when you consider that you have people from all over the country – in this world – it’s just take it to another level”, Sherman said.

John Foley, chief executive of Peloton, explains how they did it. “It’s also a TV production facility,” he said. There are five cameras, one on the track of the room.

Peloton bikes are equipped with a custom-made waterproof tablet computer that allows family drivers to watch the Chelsea scene and monitor their own metrics. It also ranks the output of each rider on the virtual list.

For $40 a month, the family driver can use the site and the archived rides without limit. It costs $2000 to buy the bike. This is a very high standard for many people. More than 10,000 people have signed up so far.

Greg Vadas of bethesda, Maryland, hid his Peloton bike in a small room in the basement next to his four real bikes. In a recent class, the coach told the driver when to adjust the tension to simulate different heights, but Vadas barely noticed. He only looked at one thing: the list.

“I have to admit, I don’t pay much attention to the coach, I’m on the board! He said.

Peloton is not the only company offering virtual teaching. Starting powhow.com allows fitness instructors to connect directly with customers via video chat and other tools, and fundamentally changes the home aerobics exercise, CEO Viva chuo said.

“Back to the VHS or Beta period, you will take Jane Fonda in your living room, but we are actually make it further than this, that is to say, you can not only in your own time to work with them, but you can also develop personal relationships with them,” chu said.

‘it may seem strange to work in front of the screen, but in fact it has become more standard,’ says Cameron Jacobs, a research manager at the sports and fitness industry association.

“A lot of people think technology, social media and physical activity sometimes clash, but that’s not the case,” says Jacobs. Today we find that connectivity enables people to gain more benefits and maximize the effectiveness of physical activity.

Whether Fitbit watches or sports equipment indicators screen, Jacobs said that the industry is now adapt to become more interactive and immersive – into an exciting new era, in this new era, course is becoming a fitness experience, not just exercise.

“You need to have fun exercising, because if it looks like a chore, it won’t stick,” jacobs said.
